Unique in its genre, the most important outdoor event in Europe combines the latest outdoor sports, with the creative dimension of film and photography. An open-air screening of the films from the invited teams marked the closing of the 4th edition of the Nissan Outdoor Games 2008. Six thousand people made their way to Interlaken on Saturday and Sunday (4th and 5th of July) to take part in the activities specially laid on for the public, with the additional opportunity of being able to see the pro athletes in person. People of all ages were welcome to come and try out the sports of kayaking, mountain biking and climbing under the watchful eyes of professionals. Some of the new features for this year included the “North Shore”, a raised mountain bike trail made of wood, with some gaps reserved for experienced riders only. John Cowan (USA), one of the best riders around at the moment, was on hand to put on a good show for the public. In climbing, kids and more experienced climbers alike were able to get a taste of vertical faces, in complete safety. Dave Graham (USA), the latest big name in the sport, was there to present his new film and show off his skill on the wall. Lin Sansoz (FRA) was next up with a graceful display on the overhang. There were also a number of takers for a refreshing try of the kayak initiation. Pro kayakers like Simon Hirter were on hand to give tips on how to do an Eskimo roll in a pool. Anyone who was keen to try it out on a river could give it a go on a section of the Aare, just next to the square. The Film festival wins over the public Encouraged by the liveliness of the crowd, the cream of extreme sports made their way to the square at Unterseen on Friday and Saturday. After five days of intense filming, specialists from each of the disciplines, as well as the public, were wowed by the performances being shown on two giant screens on Saturday night. Struck by a terrible tragic accident on Tuesday, 1st July, when a French BASE jumper died during a jump in the Jungfrau region, the event was forced to re-assess the format of this 4th edition. The organizers decided to follow the wishes of the teams involved, who unanimously decided to continue with their work, albeit in a non-competitive spirit. The risks of an accident were scrupulously taken into account in the organization of such an event. For this reason, the committee works very closely with the carefully selected professional athletes involved. All decision making processes are carried out in consultation between the two parties, with the aim of providing a working environment where the teams can best express their sporting talents.
