The fourth edition of the Nissan Outdoor Games has started with the arrival of the athletes here in Interlaken. Arriving from Scandinavia, France, Austria, The U.S and Switzerland, this mad race to produce a short film in five days starts for the five teams up for the challenge. Next Friday and Saturday, the public is invited to two days of sporting festivities, where initiations and demos will precede the official screenings of the films in the competition.

A cross-section of South Africa’s junior surfing talent was represented on day one of the 3A Surfing South Africa Mr Price Pro Junior, as girls, boys and development surfers tore apart the clean 0.5m waves on offer at Durban’s New Pier. Diminutive Southern Cape surfer Bianca Buitendag (George) emerged as a standout performer, outscoring the entire pro junior girls field with the highest heat total of the morning, a 15.00 (out of a possible 20.00). Third on the Surfing South Africa U20 girls Pro Surf Tour ratings, Buitendag earned an excellent 8.00 ride (out of a possible 10.00) for a series of powerful snaps, defeating French surfer Pauline Ado, Danielle Le Roux (Durban) and Amber Kilfoil (Durban). The Rip Curl Pro Zarautz, an ASP World Qualifying Series (WQS) 5-Star event, will be one of the main events of the 2008 ASP European Pro Surf Tour. Zarautz, famous surf city which gathered the world’s best surfers in the 90s, came back on the ASP European WQS calendar in 2007 with a successful 3-Star rated event won by local hero and current ASP Top 45 member Aritz Aranburu (EUK). Zarautz now awaits the best ASP WQS campaigners for a much expected 5-Star contest. The Rip Curl Pro Zarautz, 9-14 September, will gather for the first time in a decade the world’s best qualifiers and give the Basque Country its first ever main World Qualifying Series event. Known for its consistent beachbreaks and warm welcome to surfing fans from around the world, all eyes will be on Zarautz for the end of the European summer leg. The Rip Curl Pro Zarautz will end six weeks of intense action along Europe’s coasts and see potential ASP World Tour qualifiers rise on the international ratings before the WQS take a three-week break. With both ASP European and international ratings’ points to be clinched, the 5-Star event will bring momentum and pressure among the best surfers in the world.
