US – Action Sports Tour’s Dew Cup began last week with the Panasonic Open at the Camden Yards Sports Complex in Baltimore. The Tour consists of five competitions with athletes competing in six events — BMX park, BMX dirt, BMX vert, skateboard park, skateboard vert and freestyle motocross. Ryan Nyquist has thrived on the Dew Tour, having never finished worse than fifth in the final dirt or park standings during the Tour’s three-year existence. His consistency resulted in his taking the title last year. His tactic seems to be executing the moves he knows best to lead to good scores instead of going for new and often more dangerous tricks. SOUTH AFRICA – On Friday and Saturday nights, some of the world’s best action sports athletes let rip in the biggest extreme sports event ever held in South Africa. Headed by Brian Deegan, the most decorated FMX rider in history, the “Masters of Dirt” series made its SA debut at the Ruimsig Stadium, Joburg. One thousand cubic metres of sand was shipped in, ramps were built and lights were rigged for what is fast emerging as SA’s No1 underground sport. Played out against a funky backdrop of pumping music, pyrotechnics and dancing girls, each night was a three- hour spectacle of FMX, quad FMX, BMX dirt and mini-bike FMX. A new star emerged in the form of Botswana-born Alastair “Jakalas” Sayer. Just 23, he nailed legendary Ronnie Renner to win the step-up, soaring 9,5m. He also won the best whip event, conjuring a startling mid-air routine that had the 1000- strong crowd whooping for more. UK – White Air is an international multi-sport festival: Windsurfing, Kitesurfing and Surfing make up some of the extreme watersports events whilst disciplines such as Mountain Boarding, Skate and BMX ensure an action-packed programme on land as well as water. The event is based at the ‘White Air’ village on the seafront at Yaverland, near Sandown, on the Island’s east coast. Dates: 18-21 September. Surfing Want to win a custom built surfboard? With an 8,5 wave in the last seconds Brazilian Silvana Lima won her first title at the Billabong Surf ECO Festival in Praia do Forte, north of Bahia, beating the current WQS number one in the final, the Australian Sally Fitzgibbons, who was leading the heat in the 4 feet waves. Last year, Silvana Lima was the finalist at the Billabong Itacaré WQS and WCT, in south of Bahia, but did not win either. Last year’s Billabong Pro Junior Series Indonesia winner Heath Joske is poised for a repeat performance this year with his win at Keramas Beach in Bali over Nick Vasicek in a final that required very strategic wave selection to get the Nº 1 spot. The 30 minute final started with both surfers unable to find their way out of several 4-5 foot sheet glass barrels followed by a long lull, but then Joske locked into a fast closing barrel that he fought his way out of to post a 6.33. He followed up with a 7.17 to combo his opponent Vasicek, who gamely fought back but could only find a 7.37 before the horn blew.
