The dry conditions made the going even more extreme as the track got rougher and rougher for the riders as they hurtled down looking for glory in front of the huge crowd raising the roof in the arena. In the women’s event, Tracy Moseley (UK) forgot her disappointing start to the season, and her problems at the venue at last year’s worlds, with a stunning victory over the two women of the season so far, Sabrina Jonnier (FRA) and Rachel Atherton (UK). The men’s event was upset by the mercurial Greg Minnar of South Africa who beat Gee Atherton and Steve Peat (both UK) onto the podium. TURKEY – after successfully holding the Adampol Fourcross competition, a first-time event in Turkey in the fourcross category of mountain biking, tournament organisers 720 Extreme Sports are determined to get more extreme sports on to the country’s sports agenda. The tournament saw riders from all over the country compete, including motorcyclist Kemal Merkit who finished second in the last edition of the Dakar Rally. Merkit is a key figure in Turkey’s riding world and his presence contributed to the spirit of the event. US – Two of the youngest and most dominating riders on the 2008 MasterCraft Pro Wakeboard Tour, set new records today with wins at the Twin Cities contest. Phillip Soven, 19, of Longwood, Fla. and Nicola Butler, 16, Cape Town, South Africa not only claimed the top spots in their respective divisions during today’s finals, but both riders set new Tour records as well. Phillip Soven became the first rider in the Tour’s 17-year history to start a season off with three consecutive tour stop wins. Nicola Butler’s win was not only her third consecutive tour victory as well, but also marks the first time ever a female rider has captured three straight wins on the MasterCraft Pro Wakeboard Tour. NZ – The Demon Energy Supercross & Gravity Games will be one of the most extreme sports events to hit Vector Arena, Auckland. Over 100 tonnes of dirt will be used to prepare the arena for the host of top FMX riders from NZ, Australia and the US to do their stuff. The gamers are on the weekend of 12-13 July. Maxime Huscenot (REU), 16, was crowned Santa Surf Pro Junior Champion today after defeating outsider Jules Thomet (FRA) in the final of the ASP Europe 4-Star rated event. Huscenot, who dominated the consistent three foot (one meter) waves at El Socorro, Lanzarote, takes the ASP European Junior ratings’ lead and will be a serious contender for a possible regional crown this year. Huscenot clinched his first ASP Pro Junior title after posting the highest heat tally of the event in the first semifinal to defeat Naoum Ildefonsse (FRA), an impressive 18.43 point score (out of a possible 20). Huscenot, who won all his heats in the Santa Surf Pro Junior, was unstoppable and outsider Jules Thomet could do nothing but accept a runner-up finish, his best result to date.
