CANADA – Red Bull Flugtag — an event where today’s creative geniuses dressed in whacky costumes strap themselves to equally outrageous home-made, human-powered flying machines and take a running launch off a 30-foot pier. Question is, do any of these crazy contraptions ever actually fly? German for “flying day,” Flugtag will hit the Canadian skies, and its waters, on August 3rd 2008 over Ottawa-Gatineau’s historic Rideau Canal — only the second time Flugtag will be splashing Canada — and they’re looking for applicants! – Think you have what it takes to secure a spot in the Flugtag history books? For more information, contact them at groundcontrol@redbullflugtag.ca or call 1-877-FLUGTAG (3584824), before 30 May.. MEXICO – one surfer was killed and another narrowly escaped after two shark attacks off the Pacific coast of Mexico last weekend. A Mexican student was killed on Friday in the Zihuatanejo area, north of Acapulco, and a day later a U. S. surfer was also attacked – he managed to escape with only five cuts on his right forearm. Saturday’s attack took place off Playa Linda beach near Zihuatanejo, a sun spot popular with North American tourists. It was the third in the past month. A 21-year-old Mexican student, Aldo Mata, died surfing off the Pantla beach on Friday after a shark bit off his hand and then his right leg. Officials blame the new influx of sharks in the area on climate change. "We brought shark specialists to the area and the first thing they said was that the sharks’ presence could be because of cold water currents caused by climate change," said Guerrero state’s environment minister, Sabas de la Rosa.
