But even the best had to start somewhere. In 2008, that somewhere, for aspiring amateur riders, will be the Air Nautique Wake Games, held in Orlando at the Orlando Watersports Complex on April 24-27. The Air Nautique Wake Games is a unique team-style professional and amateur contest in which the top 10 professional riders in the King of Wake World Cup standings serve as captains and draft a 10-person team with a mix of male and female, pro and amateur riders. Team members not only go for the win in their respective divisions, they also contribute points to a team score. The team with the best overall score will take home the title. "Wake Games is the perfect opportunity for new and upcoming riders to get involved in the sport and begin to make a name for themselves," said Sean Dishman, sales and marketing director for the Air Nautique Wake Games. "A lot of times you go to big events like this with pros and amateurs and they don’t interact. At the Air Nautique Wake Games they will be on the same team pulling for each other." The contest is open to all levels of ability, with 16 divisions including: Pro Men, Pro Women, Junior Men, Junior Women, Junior Boys, Boys, Men I, Men II, Amateur Women, Girls, Masters Women, Masters and Veterans Wakeboarding; plus Pro, Amateur and Women’s Wakeskate. These incredible athletes will perform rail tricks and aerial stunts while manoeuvring on the water at a speed of approximately 30 mph. The Air Nautique Wake Games is a four-day carnival of water-sports action. But not all of the action takes place on the water. On land, fans will experience tons of great music and food; athlete autograph signings; chances to win free stuff; and shopping at the most cutting-edge stores for water-sports equipment including boats, wakeboards, wakeskates, sunglasses and the latest in wakeboarding and surfing fashions.
