
US – Extremity Events Network is running its 3rd annual Extremity Games, July 24-26, 2008, an extreme amateur sporting competition for people living with limb loss and limb difference. For the first time this year’s event is in Michigan. The opening ceremony begins at 10 a.m. on Thursday, July 24 at Baja MX in Millington, Michigan, where the events begin with BMX and Motocross. The next day competitors cross over to the South Street Skate Park in Rochester, Mich. for the skateboarding competition. Also on Friday, July 25, rock climbing competitors will tackle Planet Rock in Pontiac, Mich. The final day will be at the Pontiac Lake Recreational Area in Waterford, Mich. where the kayaking, wakeboarding and mountain biking events will be held. There will be free clinics for skateboarding, rock climbing, wakeboarding, kayaking and mountain biking held throughout the event. In addition to hosting athletes from around the world, Extremity Games will be welcoming members of the Wounded Warrior Disabled Sports Project, where recovering wounded warriors can not only compete in extreme sports, but can also learn about sports they have never tried before. UK – more than 160 teams of three will navigate themselves around Edinburgh’s urban jungle – running, mountain biking, kayaking, climbing and abseiling – aiming to ‘beat the streets’; and to mark the 5th Rat Race urban adventure race around Edinburgh’s streets, West Princes St Gardens will again be transformed into a hub of activity on Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 July. Spectators of the Rat Race itching to get in on the action will have a chance to practice for next year on the climbing tower and even get to grips with the stars of Edinburgh Rugby Club. Surfing Joy Monahan (Oahu, HAW), 22, became the 2008 ASP Women’s World Longboard Champion on Wednesday after winning the Roxy Jam event at La Côte des Basques, Biarritz. Monahan beat Chelsea Williams (Gold Coast, AUS)in the final to win her first crown, having beaten the reigning Women’s World Longboard Champion, Jennifer Smith (USA), in the semis. Monahan, placed 9th & 6th in the last two editions, is the first Hawaiin female World Longboard Champion. With Carissa Moore (HAW) having won the ASP Grade-2 ASP Pro Junior, the Hawaiin girls dominated the 2008 Roxy Jam festival. Thursday morning in Jeffreys Bay, South Africa, the 36-year-old eight-time world champion Kelly Slater extended his points lead on the ASP World Tour by defeating reigning world champion Mick Fanning of Australia 16.73-9.40 in the final of the Billabong Pro… it was the fourth win in the first five contests on the 11-event tour for Slater. It also was his 38th career victory, who now has won 75 percent of all his heats in his 14-year career. Worth noting that the top eight ranked surfers in the world all advanced to the quarterfinals, a rare feat on a tour that often springs surprises by competitors surfing in familiar waters.
